Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem

Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem (UJEP) is a public institution in north-western Bohemia. Growing out of teacher training in the 1950s and established as a university in 1991, it is named after the eminent Czech scientist Jan Evangelista Purkyně. It is now the main higher education centre of the Ústí region. It brings together faculties of production technologies and management, environment, economics, education, philosophy and arts, art and design, health care, and an institute of Slavonic and Romance studies. Its provision spans mechanical engineering and materials, ecology and chemistry, economics, pedagogy, history, languages, fine arts, nursing and social work. Located near the German border, UJEP cultivates a distinctly binational profile — Czech-German degree programmes and cross-border partnerships — and hosts around 10,000 students in a rapidly transforming region. Czech-taught studies are free of charge within the standard duration.
