Gerrit Rietveld Academy

The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is a university-level academy of art and design in Amsterdam, founded in 1924 and housed since 1967 in the building designed by Gerrit Rietveld. The Sandberg Institute operates as its graduate school. The academy offers a bachelor's degree in fine art and design with a wide range of studios — painting, sculpture, glass, graphic design, textile, ceramics, photography, interior architecture and "autonomous" design — which students of all years can access across disciplines. The Sandberg Institute's master's programmes cover design, fine art, public art and experimental fields. The school is characterised by an open, critical pedagogy: few formal lectures, tutors who are recognised artists and designers, studios open late into the evening, and a student body of which more than half comes from abroad. It is one of the most selective and international art academies in the Netherlands.
